Faith Across Borders: WEO Missionaries Serve Alongside Churches in Ghana

From August 26 through September 1, WEO missionaries Michael and Cynthia Scherer traveled to Ghana for a week centered on ministry, fellowship, teaching, and strengthening relationships with local churches.

Their journey took them from Accra into Ghana's Volta Region, where they joined WEO missionary Solomon Gorvi and local church leaders for several days of worship, outreach, children's ministry, and fellowship.

The schedule was full, but the purpose remained simple: to share the Gospel and serve alongside the people already faithfully ministering within their communities.

Serving the Next Generation

One of the important parts of the week was time spent with children through Vacation Bible School programs in Ho City and Adaklu.

Cynthia Scherer joined local leaders in working directly with the children, sharing Bible lessons and spending time getting to know the young people they had traveled so far to meet.

These moments are an important part of WEO's mission. Ministry is not only about what happens behind a pulpit. Sometimes it happens while sitting together in a small room, opening the Bible, answering questions, laughing together, and reminding a child that they are seen, loved, and valued by God.

Worshiping Together

Throughout the trip, Michael and Cynthia joined Solomon Gorvi and local believers for services and times of prayer in several communities.

From gatherings inside established churches to worship beneath a simple metal roof, the surroundings may have changed, but the reason for gathering did not.

Believers came together to pray, hear God's Word, encourage one another, and worship as one body in Christ.

Michael Scherer participated in preaching during the week's services, while Solomon Gorvi and other local ministers continued leading and sharing the Gospel within their communities.

The trip also included a Soul Winning Conference and a meeting with church leadership — opportunities not simply to minister for a few days, but to encourage those who will continue serving long after the visiting team returns home.

Building Relationships That Last

Perhaps some of the most meaningful moments of a mission trip happen outside the formal schedule.

There were conversations. Shared meals and travel. Time with children. Prayer with fellow believers. Laughter. New friendships. And the opportunity to experience Ghanaian culture through the people who welcomed Michael and Cynthia into their communities.

That welcome became especially visible when local church members presented the WEO missionaries with traditional clothing and beautiful hand-drawn portraits.

The gifts were more than souvenirs from a journey. They represented the relationships formed throughout the week and the generosity of the communities that welcomed the team.

The smiles in the photographs tell that part of the story better than words ever could.

One Mission, Many Nations

International missions can sometimes be described as people traveling somewhere to "bring" ministry to another community.

But trips like this remind us of something important: God was already at work in Ghana.

Local pastors, missionaries, teachers, families, and believers are serving their communities every day. WEO has the privilege of coming alongside them — praying with them, encouraging them, learning from them, and helping strengthen the work they are already doing.

Michael and Cynthia may have traveled thousands of miles to Ghana, but when believers gathered together in prayer and worship, the distance between their homes seemed much smaller.

Different countries. Different cultures. Different churches.

One faith. One family. One mission.

As Michael and Cynthia returned home on September 1, they carried with them much more than photographs and gifts. They carried the memories of the people they met, the children they served, the churches they worshiped alongside, and the relationships that continue even after the trip has ended.

And WEO remains grateful for every pastor, leader, missionary, child, and family in Ghana who opened their doors and welcomed our missionaries as family.

Please continue to pray for Solomon Gorvi, the churches and leaders serving throughout the region, and the children and families reached during this mission. May God continue to strengthen their work and use these partnerships to share His love far beyond what any single trip can accomplish.
