God Our Deliverer: Lessons Shared in Mattru

Around 120 students gathered at the school in Mattru today as we taught on the powerful theme of God being our Deliverer.

We began in the Book of Daniel, looking at the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego - three men who refused to compromise their faith and were delivered by God from the fiery furnace. Their story reminded us that even in the middle of impossible situations, God remains faithful.

We also shared the incredible true story of Jacob DeShazer, an American WWII prisoner of war who endured severe persecution for nearly three years after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Through God’s transforming power, Jake was delivered from hatred and bitterness toward the Japanese people.

After the war, instead of seeking revenge, he returned to Japan as a missionary to share the Gospel. His testimony impacted thousands — including members of Japanese leadership and even Mitsuo Fuchida, the lead pilot involved in the Pearl Harbor attack. Eventually, Jake DeShazer and Mitsuo Fuchida traveled throughout Japan together, sharing the message of faith, forgiveness, and redemption.

Today was a beautiful reminder that God not only delivers us from physical trials, but also from anger, hatred, fear, and unforgiveness.

God has greatly blessed us this trip with getting to share the gospel to the orphanage and school in Mattru and visit with the children here thirsty for God's word and love.
